What are Dental Implants?
A Dental Implant is a titanium post, resembling a tooth root, which is carefully placed in the jawbone beneath the gum line through a surgical procedure. This allows your dentist to attach replacement teeth or a dental bridge securely in that spot. Unlike dentures, implants are not prone to becoming loose.
How does it work?
Over several months, the Dental Implant becomes integrated into the bone and provides a stable platform to support replacement teeth. To support replacement teeth, Dental Implants normally have internal screw thread that allows a variety of different components to be fitted. When they are fitted these components provide the foundation for the long-term support of crowns, bridges, or dentures.
Following this healing period, your dentist can start restoring the new tooth with a crown or bridgework. Alternatively, two or more implants can be used to hold a denture tightly to improve natural functions.
The procedure involves a period of initial integration, while the implant fuses to the bone. This process is known as osseointegration, which describes the fusion of the titanium implant with your natural bone tissue, this has a 90% success rate.

Benefits of Dental Implants
While dentures can provide a functional and aesthetic solution for missing teeth, they can also cause discomfort and inconvenience, especially when they slip or shift while eating or speaking. Dental Implants, on the other hand, offer a more permanent and comfortable solution that won’t affect the way you speak or your diet, while preventing further damage.
Speech
One of the biggest advantages of Dental Implants is that they can significantly improve speech, something that traditional dentures often make difficult due to the “foreign object” feeling in the mouth. Additionally, missing teeth causes bone loss, further impacting upon speaking abilities. Dental Implants, on the other hand, prevent this degradation and can restore normal speech.
Eat a Normal Diet
You can look forward to eating again with Dental Implants. Dental Implants better restore the normal mouth function for our patients than traditional dentures. You will be able to enjoy a normal, varied diet as biting and chewing efficiency is comparable to that of a natural tooth.
Protection for Remaining Teeth
When a tooth is missing, the bone that once supported is resorbed, impacting the surrounding teeth and their roots. Dental Implants provide a stable base for the new tooth or teeth, preserving the bone structure and preventing further damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is everyone suitable for Dental Implants?
While Dental Implants are suitable for the majority of people who have lost a tooth, several teeth or even all of their teeth, there are few situations when implants are not suitable.
Call us on 01324 562910 to book an initial consultation to find out if you might be the right candidate.
Can I replace dentures with Dental Implants?
Yes, you can – and it will be life-changing. Dental Implants are a great alternative to traditional dentures. With implants, there is no worry of teeth slipping or falling out, and no need to avoid any activities or specific foods. Additionally, there are no clasps, clips, or plastic covering the roof of the mouth.
How painful is the Dental Implant procedure?
Although some discomfort is expected with any oral surgical procedure, many implant patients comment that they are pleasantly surprised by how mild and brief any discomfort is.
How should I look after Dental Implants?
Just like with natural teeth, Dental Implants require:
- Regular brushing and care, similar to natural teeth.
- Routine visits to your dentist and hygienist are necessary for review and maintenance.
- Flossing (although different techniques may be required).
